While everyone out there will start teaching you how to use drawing pencils or how to give special effects using drawing pencils no one seems to be interested in telling you how to choose good drawing pencils.
Choosing proper drawing pencil needs expert knowledge of what each type of drawing pencil is capable of delivering and which need is fulfilled by a particular type of drawing pencil.
So once you are ready to experiment, by the way, all artists are born experimenters, you can set your foot in the suppliers store to choose the proper pencil you need.
It always pays to experiment different types of pencils on different types of textured paper. In fact you must have a scrap book of samples of the commonly available textured paper where you can tryout the different pencils before deciding which one to use on the actual work of art.
Drawing pencils usually contain a graphite core and the quality of this graphite core determines the use of the particular pencil. The graphite hardness is graded from 9H (hardest) to 9B (softest). The hard pencils produce thin and light marks while the softer ones produce dark and thicker marks.
Vine charcoal is the next thing which you can use in place of drawing pencils. This is very easy to use and had great ability of erasure. However it must be handled with great care as they break very easily. The vine charcoal is used as drawing pencils when the initial design of the artwork is perceived. The ease of erasing helps to keep the design fluid as the work progresses.
The new pastels are also now a day’s used for replacement of drawing pencils but have difficulty in erasing.
Choose your pencils and vine charcoal depending on the actual use in the final artwork. Before using the chosen pencil on the drawing paper, use it on the scrap book to determine the effect it will give. This will eliminate the need of using eraser on the actual art.
