Drawing Pencil Tips

Drawing pencils require regular maintenance. Instead of a sharpener, you should inculcate the habit of using a craft knife. The use of a craft knife will allow you to have longer and effective pencil point and if requires the pencil point can be made into a chisel shape for using the drawing pencil as a brushing tool. Not only will this give you more options while drawing it will give you a open hand to create textures and lines of different width. However where very sharp points are requires use of a good fine and sharp edge sharpener is recommended.

The next important thing which you must keep in your mind while using drawing pencils is the use of good putty erases. Being soft and gentle on the paper especially the paper used for water color, these putty erasers are a better choice than the normal erasers. Usually the putty erasers get quite dirty when erasing as they pick up the graphite with them.

Unless this dirt is cleaned every time before you use there are every chances of smudging you beautiful creation with the dirt picked up in the previous use. It is necessary to either develop a habit of cleaning the erases by rubbing it on a hard surface every time before use or you can use your craft knife to give it a chisel shape and keep it that way as you maintain your drawing pencils.

If you are using an ordinary rubber eraser or a plastic eraser, it is very easy to get dirty from the residue it picks up. These erases also get oxidized on the surface if not used for some time. It is essential that these erases be rubbed on a hard surface unless you can see the neat and clean surface before every use. Like the putty erases you can use the craft knife to shave these erasers as well.
