The use and choice of paper is equally important as the choice of drawing pencils. While a normal smooth paper will essentially give the drawing a very sot look and shows the free flow of the drawing pencils. However the use of textured paper which usually has some sort of grain or tooth or fiber formations which usually retain the graphite in a better manner than the normal smooth paper and will usually give the drawing an entirely different look depending upon the texture used. The colors when mingled with the texture produce a magnificent look in itself.
Drawing pencils may be used in conjunctions with other medium of artistic expressions like oil and pastel colors, water colors and even ink. The other mediums not only enrich the drawing but add another dimension to the drawing created using drawing pencils.
Many artists practice the art of using water color as the base and drawing pencils to enhance the beauty created by this water color by providing different kinds of shading through proper use of different colored drawing pencils.
Drawing pencil manufacturer were at one time struggling to make the colors imparted by their drawing pencils lightfast. However with the advancement of science and technology, newer manufacturing process and chemical compositions have made the colors imparted by these drawing pencils resistant to light and they retain the same color and hue even after long periods of time.
However the choice of the drawing paper in these cases is quite important as the paper must have the ability of retaining the graphite and should not turn yellow with the passage of time. Some times after the artistic work is completed many artists either use a UV resistant spray to provide a protection coating to the art or get it framed using UV resistant glass. Either way the aim is to protect the original colors from fading.
